How do you know if you are ready to have sex?

Different people have different deciding factors that affect what they are ready for.  Be sure to check in with yourself to determine what these are for you.  Some of the things that many people consider include comfort level, partner’s comfort level, age, risk of pregnancy or STIs, and religious/ethical beliefs, among other things.  These factors are different for different individuals and may change over time.

If you pee after sex can you still get pregnant?  Can you get an STI?

Yes, you can.  Urinating after sex cannot flush out sperm or the bacteria or viral particles that cause STIs.  However, urinating after sex is still a good idea, particularly for females, in order to prevent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).

Do you really use a condom for a blow job?

Some people do and some people do not, but those who participate in oral sex without protection put themselves at risk for STIs.  Flavored condoms are made specifically for, and should only be used for, oral sex.

What is lesbian sex?

Sex can mean many different things to different people.  Really, any sexual activity that does not require a penis can be enjoyed by female partners.

What do I do if my boyfriend wants to have sex but I don’t?

Communicate your feelings of not wanting to have sex clearly.  Explain why you are uncomfortable doing so.  Be sure to discuss what your boundaries are and what you are comfortable doing.  If your partner doesn’t respect your boundaries, break up with them.

Is Plan B an abortion?

No.  Plan B, also known as the morning after pill or emergency contraception, is a high dose birth control pill (the equivalent of 4 regular pills).  It prevents ovulation (the release of an egg) and therefore prevents pregnancy, rather than ending a pregnancy that has already begun.  If you are already pregnant, Plan B cannot terminate that pregnancy.

My girlfriend forgot to take her pill one day.  Is she pregnant?

Not necessarily. Make sure that you use a back-up method of birth control (i.e. condoms) for at least two weeks.  She should take the missed pill as soon as she remembers, even if this means taking two pills in one day.  If she misses her next period, she should take a pregnancy test.

What’s a female condom?

A female condom is a contraceptive device that is inserted into the vagina before vaginal intercourse and can prevent unwanted pregnancy and STIs.  It is slightly less effective than the male condom, but may be a good method for some people because it allows a female partner to be in control of protection.  It should not be used along with a male condom.

What’s the average penis size?

Everyone is different, but the average length of an adult male’s erect penis is 5.5 to 6 inches.  However, some may fall above and below this range, and vaginal and anal canals vary in length too.  Size isn’t everything – the most important thing is to wear the right size condom.

What do you do if a condom breaks?

Talk to your partner and discuss your risks and options.  If you are at risk for unwanted pregnancy, get Plan B.  Plan B can be purchased at drugstores by people over 17 or with a doctor’s prescription for those 17 and under.  Take a pregnancy test if you miss your next period.  Make sure you get tested for STIs within the next 6 months.
